In Bid to Stay Current, Ayatollah Joins MySpace

Andy Borowitz

Hoping to reach out to his nation's millions of disaffected young people, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei today announced that he has joined the social networking site MySpace.

"If you can't beat them, join them," the Ayatollah said. "Having said that, we will also continue to beat them."

The Ayatollah said that after initial reluctance he decided to join MySpace "because that's what all the kids are doing these days."

But in his first day on the site, the Supreme Leader made few friends among Iran's young people, with most of his friend requests coming from obscure alternative bands based in Austin and Seattle.

The Ayatollah also indicated that he has been perplexed by the identity of some of his friend requests: "Who on earth is 'Britney F****ed Vids?"
