In a blog post, New York Times reporter Larry Rohter claimed that in a statement in a September 2007 op-ed that "[i]f we kept the payroll tax exactly the same but applied it to all earnings and not just the first $97,500, we could virtually eliminate the entire Social Security shortfall," Sen. Barack Obama was laying out his plan to address future shortfalls in Social Security. Rohter misrepresented the statement, claiming that Obama has now changed his position. During an appearance at Pastor Rick Warren's Saddleback Church, responding to a question about "the most gut-wrenching decision you've ever made," Sen. John McCain cited his refusal to accept an early release from a North Vietnamese prison camp. The Politico claimed that McCain's answer "shows the power of his biography, and a new willingness to publicly discuss it." On Hannity & Colmes, Bill Sammon said of falsehoods in Jerome Corsi's The Obama Nation: "Well, the nature of those inaccuracies, I think, is relatively innocuous. ... The first thing on that 40-page document that the Obama camp points out is that the author got their wedding date wrong -- the year of their wedding wrong. OK.
