Rice calls Biden a 'patriot' and 'statesman' betraying GOP spin

WASHINGTON - While traveling in the Mideast, Secretary of State Rice apparently missed out on the GOP memo that Joe Biden was to be described as a motor-mouthed lightweight.

On her plane flying to Jersualem yesterday, Rice called Biden a "statesman" and a "true patriot."
"I am not going to comment on the politics of it," Rice said of Barack Obama's choice of the Democratic senator from Delaware for the Dem veep nomination.

"I will just say that Sen. Biden is obviously a very fine statesman," Rice said. "He's a true patriot."

Biden, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has forged close relationships with leading Republicans such as Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) and others on foreign policy. Biden also constantly refers to John McCain as a "friend."

Once his nomination was announced early Saturday, the Republican National Committee put up a "Biden clock" on its Web site, counting down the seconds to the next gaffe from the famously loose-lipped Biden.
