McCain renegs on promised civil campaign

Arizona Daily Star

Apparently the high road has reached a dead end. Early on there was talk about how the 2008 presidential race would be different, and not just because of the history-making face-off between Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, who, if elected, would be the first black president, and Sen. John McCain, who, if elected, would be the oldest person to take the White House.

The public was told this would be, in McCain's words, a more "respectful" campaign. He said he understood that the American people were tired of negative ads, lies and mud-slinging. He'd been on the receiving end of an ugly attack campaign from George W. Bush during the 2000 Republican primaries.

The American public has been disrespected.

McCain's campaign has released new spots that prove McCain isn't afraid to break his promise and go negative. Instead of discussing issues, the ads seek to blast Obama for being too popular, flashing images of pop tarts Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. They include outright lies and one particularly offensive ad bathes Obama in religious imagery and includes a clip of actor Charlton Heston as Moses parting the Red Sea.

As Arizonans — the state McCain supposedly represents in Congress, though his performance on bringing in federal money and on voting in the Senate suggest otherwise — we are embarrassed by McCain's decision to go for the cheap tricks.........
