Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement in
regard to Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), and Lindsey
Graham (R-SC) traveling to North Las Vegas and Nellis Air Force base to
hold town hall discussions on defense cuts due to budget sequestration:
“Democrats and Republicans alike worked together to pass The Budget Control Act, which avoided a catastrophic default and called for substantial spending cuts. The law also established sequestration which threatened even deeper cuts in order to force the hard choices necessary to address our nation’s long-term fiscal challenges in a balanced and fair manner. I’m disappointed my Republican colleagues who are in Nevada today have forgotten that their party helped to put sequestration in place and are now choosing to put millionaires ahead of the military. And I am disappointed my Republican colleagues have forgotten that it was their party's refusal to adopt a balanced approach that closes corporate tax loopholes and asks the wealthiest to pay a little more will cause these defense and domestic cuts to occur.
“These Senators are voicing a misguided message to Nevadans, but I can’t say I’m surprised they have come to the Silver State. Instead of working with Democrats to improve America’s middle class and strengthen our economy, Republicans continue to carry out Grover Norquist’s marching orders to protect America’s wealthiest individuals. I hope my Republican colleagues who are visiting Nevada today consider how fiscally irresponsible and immoral it is to abandon deficit reduction while handing out more tax breaks for the super-rich.”
