McCain Changes Stance on Affirmative Action

ShortNews.com

When asked by ABC's "This Week" on Sunday if he supports an effort to do away with affirmative action in AZ, McCain said "Yes, I do." adding that even though he was not familiar with the details of the referendum he's "always opposed quotas".

In 1998 McCain urged retention of affirmative action saying "Rather than engage in divisive ballot initiatives, we must have a dialogue and cooperation and mutual efforts together to provide for every child in America to fulfill their expectations."

Tucker Bounds, a spokesman for the McCain campaign has added "He believes that regardless of race, ethnicity or gender, the law should be equally applied. He has long stood for the protection of civil rights and equal opportunity for all Americans."
