Attack kills 15 US and Iraqi troops, 49 injured

BAGHDAD - A fresh bout of violence across Iraq left three US soldiers and 12 Iraqi troops dead and 49 people injured, including a senior science ministry official, the US and Iraqi military said Wednesday.

In the latest escalation of violence in the northern Nineveh province, four policemen were killed and four injured in an attack on their patrol by gunmen in central Mosul, security officials told the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency.

Mosul, 400 kilometres north of Baghdad, has become a hotbed of Sunni insurgents, believed to be loyalists of the Al Qaeda in Iraq group, who fled from Baghdad and surrounding areas and regrouped in the northern provinces of Nineveh and Salahaddin.
