Al-Qaeda 'names Iraq acting head'

BBC

The militant group Al-Qaeda has appointed a deputy leader to take control of its activities in Iraq, a statement on a website has reported.
The deputy will take command while leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi recovers from wounds, the statement said.

The authenticity of the statement could not be verified.

It was reported on an Islamist website on Tuesday that Zarqawi, the man blamed for some of the bloodiest insurgent attacks in Iraq had been injured.

Jordanian-born Zarqawi has claimed scores of attacks against civilians and the security forces, as well as the kidnapping and beheading of foreigners.
