Novak cites Palin's purported "loathing for earmarks," but not her repeated requests for them
In his syndicated column, Robert Novak claimed that Gov. Sarah Palin "shares [Sen. John] McCain's loathing for earmarks, which are ingrained in the corruption-tainted politics of Alaska." But contrary to Novak's assertion that Palin has a "loathing for earmarks," she has repeatedly sought and requested hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks as governor of Alaska, and reportedly hired a D.C. lobbying firm to acquire tens of millions of dollars in earmarks while serving as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. Print media outlets reported Sen. Joe Lieberman's attack on Sen. Barack Obama at the Republican National Convention, including Lieberman's deceptive claim that Obama "vot[ed] to cut off funding for our troops on the ground," but did not report that the attack violated a pledge Lieberman had made not to "spend [his] time attacking Barack Obama" at the convention. On MSNBC Live, The New York Times' Elisabeth Bumiller uncritically repeated the McCain campaign's suggestion that "because of the rumors that were on the Internet" concerning the 17-year-old pregnant daughter of Gov. Sarah Palin, the campaign "felt they had to get the story out" about the pregnancy. But according to the Times, the McCain campaign released the information about the pregnancy on Labor Day because the media were focused on Hurricane Gustav and because "the nation was busy with family and social activities." CNN.com, UPI advance Log Cabin Republicans' false suggestion that Palin supports benefits for same-sex couples
In reports that the Log Cabin Republicans have endorsed Sen. John McCain for president, CNN.com and UPI falsely suggested that Gov. Sarah Palin supports benefits for same-sex partners of state employees. In fact, while Palin did veto a bill in 2006 that would have prevented state officials from granting spousal benefits to same-sex couples, Palin has stated that she did so because the Alaska attorney general had advised her that it was unconstitutional, not because she supported spousal benefits for same-sex couples. Dick Morris characterized Palin ethics investigation as "a fight going on between her sister and her husband"
On Hannity & Colmes, Dick Morris said of Gov. Sarah Palin: "[T]here's a fight going on between her sister and her husband and the husband tasered the kid." But the issues raised by this "fight" are not merely issues of family discord; Palin has been accused of misusing her office in allegedly pressuring the Alaska public safety commissioner to fire Palin's sister's former husband, a state trooper, which the commissioner, who was subsequently fired, refused to do. On the September 3 broadcast of San Francisco radio station KSFO's The Lee Rodgers Show, Rogers said of Takeru Kobayashi, six-time winner of the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, New York, "Just eat, eat, eat, and you gain no weight. Oh, there is no justice. God needs to take a hand in this." Co-host Tom Benner, known as "Officer Vic," agreed and added: "Even things out. Wait, that's socialism, I'm sorry. Forget it." Rodgers replied, "Well, you're right, you're right. Well, under Barack Obama, then, it'll probably be done." He continued: "Oh, lordy. Bring us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free. ... Free of the stifling stupidity of liberalism, which disguises slavery as benevolence. That's -- that's the program for the Obama campaign, by the way." Benner replied: "Arbeit macht frei." Rodgers then said, "Yeah. Make more of them dependent on the government." Read More

Ignoring Palin's video message, CBS reporter claimed McCain campaign "prove[d]" Palin has "no connection" to Alaskan Independence Party
CBS' Nancy Cordes reported: "Today, the McCain campaign released her voter registration records to prove Palin is a lifelong Republican with no connection to the [Alaskan] Independence Party." But Cordes did not note that Palin addressed the AIP's 2008 state convention in a video message in which she said the group "plays an important role in our state's politics," that she reportedly addressed the party's convention with a video message in 2006, that the McCain campaign has acknowledged that Palin "visited" the AIP's 2000 convention, or that her husband reportedly was a registered member of the party. Luntz's focus groups were told that Palin "stopp[ed] a bridge to nowhere," but apparently not that she previously supported it

Sarah Palin "with groups of independents here in Minneapolis": "[A]s the discussion goes on, they start to turn negative until they hear about her stopping a bridge to nowhere." However, Palin reportedly supported the proposal to build a bridge between Ketchikan, Alaska, and Gravina Island and suggested that Alaska's congressional delegation should continue to try to procure funding for the project. Luntz gave no indication that his focus group participants were told about Palin's prior support for the bridge. Read More
