Biden questions honesty of McCain, Palin

MEHLVILLE, Mo. -- Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden went for the jugular Tuesday, as he repeatedly accused the Republican ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin of waging a campaign of deception.

"We need a little bit of honesty in this campaign," Biden said, and asserted that the GOP was failing to tell American voters that they would do little to change the nation's economic policy. Instead, he said, Republicans are making false assertions about the Democratic proposals of Biden and the presidential nominee, Barack Obama.

For example, he said that McCain isn't talking about his plan to tax the health care benefits that millions of Americans get through their job.

A person earning $50,000 a year, with employer-provided health care worth $12,000 a year, would have to pay income taxes on all $62,000, Biden said. Now, no taxes are levied on their health care benefits.

McCain is highlighting his proposed $5,000 a year tax credit to offset some of that tax hike, but Biden noted that at least $7,000 would still be subject to the tax.

Biden also asserted that McCain's plan would prompt many businesses to drop health care coverage for their workers...........
