Former church camp leader faces child pornography charges

WATERLOO — A former Baptist camp leader was charged Tuesday with three counts of child pornography and one count of indecent solicitation of a child for incidents that occurred in April and May.

Police also are asking parents whose children may have attended the Super Summer Baptist Camp in Greenville in 2005 to check their children's computer for the man's computer online user name to see if he had any contact with them.

Columbia Police Chief Joseph Edwards said the man met one of his two victims at that camp.

"There could be a lot more victims out there," Edwards saidAaron J. Niles, 20, of Waterloo, is being held in the Monroe County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

In the pornography charges, police alleged that during April and May of this year, Niles solicited girls under the age of 18 years to pose partially naked.

In the other charge, police allege that Niles had sex with a girl under the age of 17.

Niles volunteered as a team leader at the church camp and oversaw eight to 10 teenagers, police said.

The church he attended regularly, the First Baptist Church in Columbia, was made aware of the investigation in April and May and the pastor assured police that Niles would not have any contact with children, Edwards added.

"We talked with the pastor from time to time and kept him up-to-date," Edwards said. "We called him today when we obtained the arrest warrant."

Edwards said the church allowed Niles to continue attending.

Police released his photograph and computer screen name so that parents can talk with their children about Niles and try to determine whether or not they had contact with Niles.

Screen names used by Niles include loverboyniles and godrocks30.

Edwards would like parents to call the Columbia Police Department at 618-281-5151 if, after reviewing Niles' screen names, they feel that their child may be a victim.
