Halliburton gets contract to build temporary immigration detention centers

ORANGEBURG — The crowd of approximately 30 people who gathered at Dominican College's Hennessy Center last night to hear about proposed immigration changes favored a proposal that would legalize the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.

The gathering, which included county residents, students and activists, urged the general public to get involved in the process.

Vicky Cohen, an immigration attorney, reminded people that most families were composed of legal immigrants, American citizens and others with various immigration statuses. Penalties assessed against one person would have a wide impact.

Others were alarmed to learn that plans were well under way to build temporary immigration detention centers across the nation.

The $385 million contract has been awarded to a subsidiary of the Halliburton corporation, an engineering and defense contractor.
