BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq marks the third anniversary of the US-led invasion Monday deadlocked over its next national government, plagued by rampant lawlessness and faced with the threat of civil war.
With fresh batches of corpses turning up on the streets of Baghdad daily and threats of increased sectarian strife, there have been rising calls for Iraq's politicians to put aside their differences and reach a deal on forming the government three months after the landmark December election.
On Monday a Kurdish negotiator said Iraq's political parties had suspended negotiations on a new government for one week, but had agreed on the creation of a new security council.
"The negotiations with the other lists to form the government will start in one week," Mahmoud Othman said.
