Sixth Ohio Reservist to Stand Trial in Prisoner Abuse Case
FORT BLISS, Texas (AP) - Sgt. Duane M. Grubb stands accused of mistreating a detainee in Afghanistan and making a false official statement. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The reservist, from the Cincinnati-based 377th Military Police Company, was to stand trial Thursday. He is the sixth Ohio-based reservist to stand trial in an abuse investigation prompted after two other detainees died at the Bagram facility in 2002.
Prosecutors in charge of the case against Sgt. Alan J. Driver, another reservist accused of mistreating detainee Zarif Khan, said during an unrelated hearing Tuesday that Khan has been released from American custody and cannot be located.
Investigators say Grubb hit Khan at least one time in November 2002 and then lied about it. Soldiers had dubbed Khan "Timmy" after a developmentally disabled character on the TV cartoon "South Park."
Grubb is accused of using a knee strike, known as a common peroneal strike, on Khan. That strike, which has been described as a form of corporal punishment, has been at issue in many of the abuse cases tried at Fort Bliss........
