Culture of Corruption: Kentucky Prosecutors Seek Grand Jury Extension in Ernie Fletcher (R-KY) Political Influence Case

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Prosecutors asked for a 90-day extension Monday of the special grand jury investigating Gov. Ernie Fletcher's administration for alleged political influence in state hiring and firing.

Since the investigation began in May, 119 witnesses have been subpoenaed to testify or produce documents, according to a filing by the attorney general's office. But much more evidence remains to be sifted, the filing said.

Assistant Attorney General Scott Crawford-Sutherland last week said a "mountain of evidence" has not yet been presented to the grand jury, which would expire Nov. 20 without an extension.

Lawyers for the Fletcher administration and prosecutors have been involved in a dispute over which state officials' e-mail accounts should be open to the grand jury.

Sheryl Snyder, Fletcher's attorney, has said prosecutors were seeking broad access to e-mails, including those of low-ranking employees in the governor's office who were not pertinent to the investigation.

A hearing in that matter is scheduled for Thursday.
