CAFTA Protest Leaves One Dead

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) - Gunfire erupted Tuesday as police clashed with demonstrators who blocked a highway in northeastern Guatemala to protest a free trade plan with the United States. Authorities said one protester was killed.President Oscar Berger signed the accord into law Tuesday despite several protests over the past week. The measure must still be ratified by the U.S. Congress....

Fabiola Hernandez, an office worker reached by telephone, said she saw police shoot toward protesters along a highway leading to the Mexican border, 170 miles northeast of the capital, Guatemala City.

Police said one person died but a witness who identified himself as Marvin Rivas told Guatemala City's Radio Sonora that two people were killed. The radio also said there were unconfirmed reports of several injuries.
