Fox News Pays For DeLay Air Time

Rep. Tom DeLay filed a report with the Clerk of the House of Representatives indicating he received free travel valued at $13,998.55 from Fox News Sunday for "officially connected travel" on October 1-2, 2005, from Sugarland, TX to Washington, D.C. and back to Sugarland, TX. Rep. DeLay appeared on Fox News Sunday on October 2, 2005, the weekend after his indictment on September 28, 2005.

What else in new?

EVERYBODY pays Tom DeLay.

We can only be thankful that, this time, it is not with taxpayers' money.

Must be nice for someone under indictment to travel first class.
After all they can't be bothered to mix with the riff-raff.

Holy junket, Batman! $14,000 for a one day trip? I travel regularly to Africa for work. A typical one month trip, including airfare, is 4 to 5 thousand dollars. What the heck is he doing spending 14,000 smackers in a single day, especially given that he has residences at both ends?

Breaking this down a little, Expedia has a first class, non-stop roundtrip for next weekend between Houston and Cowboy President National for $1148.90. The same itinerary is available in coach for $504. (You could save big bucks with a connecting flight, but we don't want to inconvenience poor Mr. Delay.) A round trip between Sugar Land and Oil President Intercontinental Airport on Texans Shuttle is $65, according to http://texansshuttle.com/rates.html . Delay has a parking space at the airport in DC, so his transport on that end is $0.38/ mile, with a total to the Fox studio and back of probably less than 3 bucks, and maybe a ten-spot for parking if they don't have it on-site. Even if Delay took a private car to the airport in Houston, there's no way the total trip, first class, could come to more than $1400, or one tenth of what he spent.

Of course, Delay could have done the interview from the comfort of the KRIV Fox 26 News studios in Houston. The total cost for such a trip would have been close to ZERO, since the local affiliate could have swung by to pick him up in their own car. Heck, Delay could have even have taken the 163 Metro bus, transferred to the 25, and been there in 34 minutes.

Seriously, how many of his constitutents have ever spent $14,000 on a vacation? How many would spend that kind of money on a one day trip, even if they could? When you spend your own money, you tend to spend it more wisely, even if you've got plenty. Let's see how Delay feels about spending $14,000 when he's restricted to what he can earn stamping license plates in the Texas Pen.
