A man who spent more than 27 years in prison has been cleared of a 1980 murder and is expected to be released as soon as Tuesday. He would be the nation’s longest-serving person who had been exonerated by DNA testing after a wrongful conviction, his lawyers said. The inmate, James Lee Woodard, 55, of Dallas, was jailed in January 1981 and sentenced to life in prison in July 1981 for the murder of a Dallas woman found sexually assaulted and strangled near the Trinity River in 1980.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." Samuel Adams, (1722-1803)
