O'Reilly falsely asserted Holder "ordered" wall between CIA and FBI

On his radio show, Bill O'Reilly advanced the falsehood that a 1995 memo written by then-Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick prohibited intelligence-sharing between the FBI and the CIA, thereby causing the intelligence failures that led to the 9-11 attacks, and asserted that Eric Holder, along with Janet Reno and Gorelick, "said that the CIA and the FBI couldn't talk to each other on investigative matters." In fact, the Gorelick memo had no impact on communications between the FBI and the CIA, the Department of Defense, or any other agencies. Read More

Bloomberg article headlined "Obama Faces Rebellion From Democrats on ... Nominations" leaves out key facts

In a Bloomberg News article headlined "Obama Faces Rebellion From Democrats on Stimulus, Nominations," the only evidence cited in the article of "rebellion from Democrats" on President-elect Obama's "nominations" was that Sen. Dianne Feinstein "said she hadn't been consulted on the pick" of Leon Panetta for CIA director "and preferred a CIA director with more experience in intelligence," and that Rep. John Conyers "took aim at reports that Obama is considering naming CNN reporter Sanjay Gupta as surgeon general." In fact, Feinstein reportedly stated that she was "going to vote for" Panetta. And as a member of the House of Representatives, Conyers will not have a vote on Gupta's confirmation. Read More

On Morning Joe, Buchanan did not acknowledge Bush official's reason for saying U.S. military tortured detainee

On MSNBC's Morning Joe, discussing a Washington Post article reporting Bush administration official Susan Crawford's conclusion that Guantánamo detainee Mohammed al-Qahtani was tortured, Pat Buchanan suggested that specific techniques used on Qahtani were not torture, ignoring the reason Crawford gave for reaching her conclusion. As Mika Brzezinski noted, Crawford said her conclusion that Qahtani was tortured was based not on "any one particular act," but on "a combination of things" Crawford called "abusive," "uncalled for," and "coercive." Fox News' Garrett ignores Fox's own reporting that Republican senators support Geithner

On Fox News' Special Report, reporting on reactions to the disclosure that Treasury Secretary-designate Timothy F. Geithner failed to pay certain taxes while employed at the International Monetary Fund, Major Garrett asserted: "Senate Democrats are closing ranks ... and Senate Republicans are keeping their powder dry." In fact, less than two hours before Garrett's report, Republican Sen. Judd Gregg made statements in support of Geithner on Fox News' Your World with Neil Cavuto. Read More

MSNBC continues to host Hitchens to target the Clintons

Christopher Hitchens made another appearance on MSNBC and again targeted the Clintons, claiming: "No other president has had a senator on hand in the Senate who does favors for businessmen who are later found to have given large donations from upstate New York to the Clinton Foundation. Is it a case of buy one, get one free? I would maintain that it is." But neither Hitchens nor 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue host David Shuster pointed out that according to The New York Times article to which Hitchens was referring, Hillary Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines "said that Mrs. Clinton did not solicit the donation from" the businessman "or discuss it with him or anyone on his behalf, and that she was unaware of its timing and size until last month." Hannity criticized gay Episcopal bishop for "partisan hatred," but called partisan Rev. Falwell a "very dear friend"

On his Fox News show, Sean Hannity claimed that Rev. Gene Robinson "bashed President Bush" in a prayer published in GQ magazine and then stated: "You know, all along, I actually thought pastors were supposed to spread the love of God, not fan the flames of partisan hatred." However, Hannity frequently praised the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, whom he described as a "very dear friend," despite Falwell's history of inflammatory partisan statements. Read More
