GMA falsely claimed Obama was making "his first trip to the war zones"
During the July 18 edition of ABC's Good Morning America, anchor Robin Roberts falsely claimed that Sen. Barack Obama's planned visit to Iraq and Afghanistan was "his first trip to the war zones." In fact, Obama has made a previous visit to Iraq as part of a January 2006 Middle East trip that also included stops in Israel and Jordan. Read More

NBC's Mitchell baselessly claimed Obama "has the least foreign policy experience of recent presidential candidates ... except Jimmy Carter"
On the July 17 edition of MSNBC Live, discussing Sen. Barack Obama's upcoming trip to Europe and the Middle East, NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell asserted: "The bottom line is you have a Democratic nominee, presumptive nominee, who has the least foreign policy experience of recent presidential candidates, of anyone except Jimmy Carter, and he's got to prove himself." But Mitchell did not elaborate on her claim that Obama's foreign policy experience is less than that of the governors who have become president since Carter, including the current president. Kilmeade on NY Times report of American deaths in Iraq due to faulty wiring: "They had to find the negative story in Iraq?"
On Fox & Friends First, after Gretchen Carlson reported that "The New York Times says shoddy electrical wiring has killed 13 Americans and injured many more," Brian Kilmeade stated: "They had to find the negative story in Iraq?" When Carlson again discussed the Times story on Fox & Friends, Kilmeade stated: "So, this is America bad?" Read More

Following network's lead, CNN.com uncritically aired McCain's false attack on Obama's health care plan
CNN.com's Political Ticker blog uncritically repeated the false claim by Sen. John McCain that Sen. Barack Obama favors "hav[ing] the government take over the health care system in America." In fact, Obama has called for individuals to choose their own insurance and has not proposed that the "government take over the health care system in America." CNN has repeatedly uncritically aired -- or repeated -- similar attacks by McCain. Read More

Fox News Sunday's Wallace, Chicago Tribune's Dorning falsely claimed McCain's repeated Iran training falsehood was momentary
Fox News Sunday's Chris Wallace falsely claimed that Sen. John McCain "momentarily mistook Shias and Sunnis in Jordan," and the Chicago Tribune's Michael Dorning asserted that if Sen. Barack Obama "makes a mistake" on his upcoming overseas trip, "it'll be a much bigger deal than, say, when McCain was in Jordan, or somewhere in the Middle East, and basically mixed up Shia and Sunnis for a moment." In fact, McCain did not "mix[] up" Shias and Sunnis just for a moment; he made the false statement three times in two days. Read More

O'Reilly: Fox News altered NY Times reporter's photo to "ma[ke] fun of him ... for painting a distorted ratings picture ... and propping up MSNBC"
Commenting on Fox & Friends' airing of an altered photo of New York Times reporter Jacques Steinberg, Fox News' Bill O'Reilly said: "You may remember Fox News made fun of him recently for painting a distorted ratings picture -- that's why they distorted his picture -- and propping up MSNBC." O'Reilly previously compared the altered photo, which Fox & Friends did not indicate was distorted, to a Times illustration of him. Read More

Levin attacks "Jon Leibowitz, a.k.a Jon Stewart": "I'm really tired of these phony intellectuals ... arrogantly looking down their sizable noses at our armed forces"
On his radio show, Mark Levin said, "As you know, from time to time, we monitor Jon Leibowitz, a.k.a. Jon Stewart, as well as some of the other nudniks out there." While discussing remarks Stewart made on his Comedy Central show, Levin stated, "I'm really tired of these phony intellectuals -- and that's what they are, phony -- arrogantly looking down their sizable noses at our armed forces." WSJ cites Field Poll survey, ignores leading question on offshore drilling
In an article citing the newly released Field Poll, The Wall Street Journal reported that "43% of Californians support the idea of drilling for oil or natural gas along the state's coast, compared with 51% who oppose it," without noting that the poll question included the false suggestion that "drill[ing] more oil and gas wells in state tidelands" would in fact "deal with the rising cost of energy" in the near future. Hannity falsely suggested no oil in areas already available to oil companies for drilling
Sean Hannity falsely suggested that federal areas legally available for leasing by oil companies contain no oil. In fact, federal agencies have estimated that more oil exists on the tens of millions of acres of federal areas currently legally available for drilling than there is in the areas currently off limits to drilling. CNN's Situation Room aired McCain's ad attacking Obama, but ignored McCain's own record on issues highlighted in ad
On CNN's The Situation Room, Dana Bash uncritically aired an ad by Sen. John McCain that states that Sen. Barack Obama "never held a single Senate hearing on Afghanistan. He hasn't been to Iraq in years. He voted against funding our troops -- positions that helped him win his nomination." Neither Bash nor host Wolf Blitzer noted that McCain himself "voted against funding our troops" when he voted against legislation that would have provided funds for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
