Letter to The Monitor: Now, I'm for Obama

It has taken me quite some time to be able to say this, but I am supporting Sen. Barrack Obama for president.

I'm what the media likes to call one of those "angry female Clinton supporters" who has spent the past month cursing the media and DNC rules committee and vowing to vote for John McCain. But after serious consideration and a series of editorials and letters in the Monitor, I have gotten over my disappointment and remembered what led me to support Sen. Hillary Clinton in the first place.

It was not her gender, or leadership experience (though those were factors) but the causes she stood for: helping the poor and fixing our economy by repealing George Bush's tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and creating universal health care; fighting global warming; bringing our troops home from Iraq; and, most important, protecting a women's right to choose.

These are all issues on which I agree with Sen. Obama and on which Sen. McCain would continue George Bush's failed policies. Look at the Supreme Court and decide whether our country can survive another Republican term. The court's most recent decisions have convinced me that we can not.

I am urging my fellow Clinton supporters to appreciate what we did accomplish and remember that we are all Democrats. Our differences with Sen. Obama are miniscule compared to those with Sen. McCain.

The last eight years have done enough damage to our country to last a lifetime, and we can not afford to let them continue. That is why I am voting for Sen. Obama in November.
