US diplomat shot in Sudan attack

BBC

A US diplomat was wounded and his Sudanese driver killed in a shooting incident in the capital of Sudan, Khartoum, reports say.

The Sudanese driver was killed on the spot and the US official critically injured as they were heading home.

The attack happened during the early hours on Tuesday in a main street of the capital.

It is not yet clear whether the attack was politically motivated, as crime is fairly high in the city.

The shooting happened the day after a joint African Union-United Nations force took over peacekeeping duties in Sudan's war-torn Darfur region.

Anti-Western and anti-US feelings are running high in Sudan, because of Western criticism of Khartoum's policies in Darfur, observers say.
