Virginia state senator attacks rival in flier - Claims opponent favors ‘teaching the gay lifestyle’

Friday, November 02, 2007

The gloves are off in a contentious Virginia state Senate race as one of the candidates released a flier attacking his opponent’s comments on gay issues and schools.

A campaign mailer sent by Sen. Jay O’Brien (R) shows a teacher standing in front of a classroom of middle school students. The ad states, “OK, fifth graders, put away your math and science books … George Barker says we have to study other things.” It goes on to say Barker advocates “forcing public schools to teach alternative lifestyles in the classroom,” and that he would vote for “legislation that would teach students about the GLBT lifestyle during school hours — regardless of their family’s own beliefs.”

The ad was paid for by the Republican Party of Virginia,..
