Two Iraqi soldiers and eight members of an anti-al-Qaeda group have been killed by militants near Baghdad.
The fighters, who wore Iraqi army fatigues and have been linked to al-Qaeda, attacked a checkpoint in Hawr Rajab village, south of the capital.
Interior ministry officials said the militants killed the two soldiers, then seized an army vehicle and assaulted the Hawr Rajab Awakening Council HQ.
Local anti-al-Qaeda police units have been set up in Iraq by tribal sheikhs.
The predominantly Sunni and US-allied awakening councils have flourished across the country and have been credited with helping to significantly reduce violence.
