U.S. Offers Intelligence Sharing With Turkey On Kurdish Rebels

Washington (AHN) - Washington has offered to provide intelligence information to Turkish military in its efforts against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters in Washington, "Actionable intelligence is something that we can provide."

On Monday, U.S. President George Bush told Turkish President Abdullah Gul over the phone the U.S. supports Ankara's efforts to stop deadly attacks launched by the Kurdish Workers' Party or PKK.

The Turkish parliament has approved a measure allowing cross-border military attacks against the PKK from northern Iraq despite plea from Baghdad against such actions.

The governments of Turkey and Iraq were currently engaged in high-level talks to discuss the tension and find diplomatic solutions.

U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack says the dialog between Ankara and Baghdad regarding the sensitive issue is still ongoing.

He said, "We're working to resolve diplomatically what is a very difficult problem. We do not believe that unilateral Turkish actions are the way to resolve this."

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Tuesday pledged to expel the PKK militants from its northern territory.
