Debate moderators allowed Giuliani to misrepresent Clinton statement on free markets

During the October 9 Republican presidential debate, MSNBC's Chris Matthews and CNBC's Maria Bartitomo did not challenge Rudy Giuliani's claim that Sen. Hillary Clinton "once said that the unfettered free market is the most destructive force in modern America." In fact, in a 1996 interview, Clinton said she agreed with the quote, "The unfettered free market has been the most radically disruptive force in American life in the last generation." Read more

Fox & Friends aired "Dean scream" and "Clinton cackle" to show purported similarities

During the October 9 edition of Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy asked Republican pollster Frank Luntz: "What do you think of [Democratic presidential candidate] John Edwards -- the guy with the $400 haircut -- yesterday, saying, 'Hey, don't be so fast to pick [Sen.] Hillary [Rodham Clinton (D-NY)]. Remember [former Vermont Gov.] Howard Dean [D].' " As Luntz responded, "[Y]es, remember how Howard Dean went up, and remember how Howard Dean came down," Fox News aired an audio clip of Dean's exclamation during his 2004 concession speech after the Iowa Democratic presidential primary. After Doocy replied, "That's like a cackle," Fox News aired part of an audio clip of Clinton laughing during a September 23 interview on Fox Broadcasting Co.'s Fox News Sunday. Read more

On the October 8 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter told co-host Sean Hannity, "I do not want to be fitted for a burqa, so I will join you in fighting President Hillary Clinton." Coulter's comment came after Hannity, referring to the leading Republican 2008 presidential candidates, asserted: "You know what? On the defining issue of our time, all of them have taken a strong position on terrorism," adding, "If we don't have a country because the country's been blown up by people who want to kill us, that's an important campaign issue." Later during the segment, co-host Alan Colmes told Coulter that "if Hillary's elected, we're not going to be wearing burqas, OK? I don't think that's going to happen." Read more

On the October 8 edition of his CNN Headline News show, Glenn Beck began a segment on Iran by asserting, "War with Iran is no longer a question of 'if,' I believe it's a question of 'when.' " Beck went on to state: "Iran has long been the puppet master in the Middle East. You don't have to take my word for it. Just watch any episode of Law & Order. Use the thinking, you know, that helps them solve all the tough cases. Iran has the means, the motive, and the opportunity to try and destroy our American way of life by controlling the Middle East."

Limbaugh falsely claimed Reid and other Democrats "do not show publicly" with VoteVets representatives

Rush Limbaugh, discussing Sen. Harry Reid's floor speech criticizing Limbaugh's September 26 comments characterizing service members who support U.S. withdrawal from Iraq as "phony soldiers," asserted that Reid "didn't mention VoteVets.org. They never hold press conferences with them." Limbaugh continued: "I never see Dingy Harry with members of VoteVets.org standing with him on the podium. Why is that? ... The reason Dingy Harry and the rest of the Democrats do not show publicly with members of VoteVets.org is because they don't know -- they don't want you to know -- the intricate degree of coordination between these anti-war groups and elected Democrats in the House and the Senate. And that's why they never cite them." In fact, Reid has appeared with VoteVets representatives at press conferences, and Democrats have issued press releases citing VoteVets. Read more
