A naval expert has said the Russian sailors trapped in a submarine beneath the Pacific Ocean "would have died" were it not for British help.
Commander Ian Riches of the Submarine Escape & Rescue team said conditions would have been "pretty awful".
A British team used a remote-control mini-sub to free the vessel, which was snagged on debris on Thursday.
