British Conservative MP Calls U.S. Cowards

LONDON (AP) - Air Force personnel at a major U.S. base in Britain have been ordered to stay out of London because of safety fears, a military spokesman said Tuesday.
The order to 5,000 Air Force men and women at Mildenhall Air Force Base in eastern England were issued Thursday following four terrorist bombings on the London transport system, said Air Force spokesman Matt Tulis.

The order applied to all of the area inside the M25 highway encircling London, he said.

"The main reason is for the security and safety of our military folks," Tulis said.

The orders contrasted with British officials' urgings of Londoners to get on with normal life, and the U.S. order caused some indignation.

"I would have hoped our American allies could show a little more courage," said Andrew Robathan, a Conservative member of Parliament.

The Daily Mail newspaper said in an editorial: "We trust the 4 million Americans who come to London each year are made of sterner stuff than the U.S. Air Force."
