
In their biggest demonstration to date, thousands of teachers, nurses, firefighters and their supporters gathered at the State Capitol Wednesday. They were there to protest the governor's education budget and his spending and pension reform proposals. They're also upset at being characterized as "special interests."Teachers are frustrated by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's refusal to repay $2 billion borrowed from mandated Proposition 98 education funding. Education leaders who agreed to the onetime state budget bailout believed the money would be returned in the 2005-2006 spending plan. Instead, the governor wants to repay the funds over 15 years starting with the 2006-2007 fiscal year.
