Iraq’s New National Assembly Opens Amid Explosions

BBC

Iraq's new interim parliament has begun its inaugural session, with the main factions still unable to agree on a coalition government.

As deputies gathered at the assembly in Baghdad, explosions were heard close to the venue in the city's fortified Green Zone but proceedings were not affected.
Party officials had hoped to strike a power-sharing deal.

But negotiations are still going on, more than six weeks after the first democratic election for 50 years.
Negotiators say the parties in the Transitional National Assembly hope to reach an agreement by the end of the month.

A car bomb earlier on Wednesday killed three Iraqi soldiers and wounded seven other people at an army checkpoint in the town of Baquba, 60km (35 miles) north-east of Baghdad.
