Radio Ads Target Delay and His Friends

WASHINGTON - MoveOn.org, a liberal political action group, has targeted seven vulnerable GOP House members by running radio ads in their districts urging them to remove Tom DeLay as majority leader because of alleged ethics violations.

The spots, which begin airing today and will run for a week, are an effort by the well-funded Democratic group to make DeLay and his ethical problems a defining issue in the 2006 elections.

"We are making a point that there will be a political price to pay for the Republican majority if they don't get rid of DeLay," said Tom Matzzie, the Washington director of the MoveOn PAC.

Matzzie said his group placed the $150,000 ad buy in six competitive congressional districts as well as in the district of Rep. Melissa Hart, R-Pa., who sits on the House Ethics Committee.

Truth and Deceit

NYT

When he accepted the Republican nomination for president in 1968, Richard Nixon said, "Let us begin by committing ourselves to the truth - to see it as it is, and tell it like it is - to find the truth, to speak the truth, and to live the truth."

Trust, said Ronald Reagan, but verify.

Now, with George W. Bush in charge, the nation is mired in yet another tragic period marked by incompetence, duplicity, bad faith and outright lies coming once again from the very top of the government.

Just last month we had the disclosure of a previously secret British government memorandum that offered further confirmation that the American public and the world were spoon-fed bogus information by the Bush administration in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq.

UN Veteran Fired Over Oil Scandal

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has sacked a senior official accused of serious misconduct over Iraq's oil-for-food programme.

Joseph Stephanides, who is alleged to have steered a lucrative contract to a British firm, is the first UN employee sacked over the scandal.

Mr Annan concluded that Mr Stephanides, of Cyprus, had breached UN staff procurement rules, a spokesman said.

Mr Stephanides, 59, rejected the charges and said he planned to appeal.

"I am very disappointed by this decision," the UN veteran of 25 years told the Associated Press news agency.

Mr Stephanides, who was head of the Security Council affairs division, said: "I look to the appeal process in the confident hope that justice will be made and I will be exonerated because I have committed no wrongdoing."

His lawyer told Reuters the decision to award the contract was made by Mr Stephanides' superiors.

Blast Targets Afghanistan Mosque

At least 20 people have died in a suspected suicide bomb attack at a mosque in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, the worst attack this year.
Kabul police chief Mohammed Akram was among those killed, officials say.

He was among many who were at the mosque to mourn a senior anti-Taleban cleric, who was shot dead on Sunday.

Mawlavi Abdullah Fayaz was killed by two men on a motorcycle as he left his office. Last week he made a speech attacking Taleban leader Mullah Omar.

No group has yet said it carried out the attack.

Eyewitnesses say the Abdul Rab mosque in the heart of Kandahar was filled with mourners at the time of the attack, which took place at 0900 (0430 GMT).

"I heard a loud explosion," Mohammad, who owns a money-changing shop in the vicinity of the mosque, told the BBC News website.
